Baselworld 2018: Hands-on with Blancpain's three new Bathyscaphe watches
For Baselworld 2018, the 43mm Bathyscaphe case hasn't changed, but what's inside it most certainly has. The brand has brought three new references to this modern diver, each of which is equipped with its own unique complication, resulting in three equally visually distinct variants.
The first, and perhaps most visually 'new' of the three is ref. 5052-1110-NABA – the vintage-inspired "Day Date," with a lovely tobacco-colored dial that's more proportionately filled with 12 newly shaped applied hour markers, and a series of concentric rectangles comprising the outer chapter ring, which is split at 3:00 by the day/date aperture. The end result channels a warm, almost whimsical vintage aesthetic that we've not yet seen in the Bathyscaphe.
At first glance, reference 5071-1110-B52A is the most 'similar' to the standard date-only Bathyscaphe thanks to that 'Meteor Gray' dial and Liquid Metal bezel, but a closer look reveals the Annual Calendar complication with the day of the week, the date, and the month at 2, 3, and 4:00, respectively. The case remains largely unchanged – it still measures 43mm by a hair over 13mm thick, and with 23mm lugs.
Lastly, with reference 5054-1110-B52A, Blancpain has worked in its impressive Complete Calendar complication which takes the Annual Calendar (day, pointer date, month) and adds a moonphase at 6:00. Interestingly enough, the added complication only increases the case thickness by a millimeter, bringing it to 13.90mm thick.
We also saw a new Fifty Fathoms in titanium with a grande date at 6:00 (sneak peek below) – another very cool piece we'll be sharing impressions of shortly.
